How long is a session?
Session length is not fixed. In Lacanian practice, the session ends when something significant has been spoken. This is part of the clinical approach, not an oversight. It allows the work to follow what is genuinely emerging rather than being cut off by the clock.
Why do you use a couch?
The couch is an invitation to speak freely, without the pressure of eye contact. It creates a different kind of space for thought, one that many people find unexpectedly liberating. You are never required to use it — it is simply there if it helps you speak more openly.
How often do we meet?
Most people begin with weekly sessions. The frequency can be discussed together as our work develops. Regularity matters in psychoanalytic work, as it creates the continuity needed for deeper exploration.
Is this like CBT?
Not exactly. Where CBT focuses on changing thought patterns through structured exercises, psychoanalytic work explores the deeper roots of what repeats in your life. The aim is not to manage symptoms quickly but to understand what drives your experience — often in ways you had not anticipated.
Can we meet online?
Yes. Online sessions are available and can be just as effective as meeting in person. We can discuss what works best for you. What matters most is having a confidential space where you can speak freely.
What languages are sessions available in?
Sessions are available in English and Portuguese. You can choose whichever language feels most natural for you to speak in.
Can I come for only a few sessions?
You are welcome to come for as long as feels right. Some people find a few sessions clarifying; others choose to continue over a longer period. There is no obligation either way. The initial session is itself an opportunity to see whether this way of working suits you.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is a conversation. There are no lengthy intake forms and no diagnostic labels imposed in advance. You arrive as you are, and we explore what has brought you to therapy and whether working together feels right for you.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed. You can contact me directly to arrange an initial session. If you are unsure whether psychoanalytic psychotherapy is the right fit, the first meeting is a good place to explore that question together.
Is everything confidential?
Yes. What you say in therapy remains confidential, within the limits set by professional ethics and the law. I am an accredited member of APPI and ICP, and I adhere to their codes of practice.
What are your fees?
Individual sessions are €80–€95, with a sliding scale available. Couples sessions are €125. Full details on cancellation, payment methods, and practical arrangements can be found on the fees section. View fees & practical information
